Sunday 25th of June 1950, Le Mans 24 hour circuit around 4 p.m. The still strong sunshine heating the 60 000 spectators massed alongside the track witnessed the two white & blue Cadillacs covered in a mixture of oil, dust and insects pass the chequered flag taking 10th & 11th places respectively in the general classification.
The higher placed Cadillac was a virtually stock type 61 coupe driver by the Collier brothers and covered 3 149 km at a average of 131 km/h in front of its sister Cadillac a spider nicknamed « Le Monstre » (The Monster) and driven by Briggs Cunningham & Phil Walter who drove for just 9 kilometres.
The participation of these two Cadillacs was one of the high points of this second post war running of the Le Mans 24 Hours. A circuit which had not admired a 100 % American vehicle since 1935.
After that years Le Mans a Cadillac Coupe type « 61 » with a mechanical gearbox designed un shortened by approximately 22 cm, as was named the « Coupe 61 Cunningham Le Mans » in honour of the excellent result obtained at the 1950 Le Mans. Between the 1930’s & 1975, this was the only period which lasted just two years that Cadillac offered a shortened model. In 1952 the term « 61 » was finally abandoned by Cadillac.
All these Cadillacs were delivered with a 4 speed automatic gearbox. It took a special order to the factory to be able to have a mechanical 3 speed gearbox with an unsynchronized first gear, less modern and less comfortable to drive but offering better acceleration and top speed. Approximately just 40 vehicles were built with a mechanical gearbox between 1950 & 1951.
The English motoring magazine of the time “Motor” noted that from 0 to 90 mph this model accelerated better than a Jaguar XK 120 the reference model of the time for the English press.
Racing history for this model type : 2nd & 3rd in the general classification of the 1950 Carrera Panaméricaine, after having won the first 5 stages. During the first stage for the first time in rallying history it was won at an average speed greater than 160 km/h.(the 375 km Cuidad Juarez/Chihuahua stage being completed at an average of 161 km/h).
The vehicle offered he has FIA papers period : E, FIA class : C GTS 7.
Included with the vehicle is a rare increased performance kit.Cadillac cast iron inlet manifold, with 2 Rochester quadruple body carburettors mounted on top (giving 8 carburettors in total!) which are topped with a triangular twin oil bath air filter.
Developed for the 1955 Cadillac Eldorado (same engine as this model). Estimated performance gain compared to the original carburettors approx. 30 hp. This kit though not for the same year as the vehicle is generally accepted without problems in historic vehicle events.
