In the late 1960s, the BMW line-up lacked a 6-cylinder coupé able to compete with Mercedes’ own 250 SE and 280 SE, respectively launched in 1965 and 1967.
Using the underpinnings of the 2000C and 2000CS, the 2800 CS replaced them in 1969. Longer than its predecessors, the 2800 CS allowed the use of the all 2,800cc, 6-cylinder engine from the E3 7-Series developing 170 bhp.
